Chargers, Raiders, Lease Carson Land for Stadium

Just after the City of San Diego proposed a plan that would build a $1.1 billion stadium in the Mission Valley neighborhood there, the owners of the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders have obtained a 17-month lease in Carson for a proposed $1.7 billion, 68,000-seat stadium that both NFL teams would use.

The organizations bought 157 acres from Starwood Capital, then transferred it to the City of Carson, from which it will lease the plot for $400,000 a year. The length of the lease is to determine whether or not a stadium is feasible on the site.

Besides the stadium, a hotel could be built on the property as well as other uses. The two teams would privately fund the Carson facility.

Meanwhile, the Chargers are still in talks to keep the team in San Diego.
