CHA Reaches Settlement in Long-Running Class Action
Fifty-two years after it was filed, a class-action lawsuit on behalf of Chicago’s public housing residents has led to a settlement agreement. Under terms of the agreement announced in late December, the Chicago Housing Authority would address its obligations to offset the impacts of racial segregation by July 31, 2024.
“We believe this proposed settlement provides a victory for public housing residents who will gain substantial new opportunities under the agreement, while at the same time giving CHA management additional latitude to achieve the agreement’s goals over the next five years,” said BPI attorney Alexander Polikoff, who has worked on Gautreaux v. Chicago Housing Authority since filing it in 1966.
Among other provisions, the agreement calls for CHA to abide by a detailed schedule for planning and construction of its “Plan for Transformation” mixed-income communities currently underway or planned. A public hearing on the agreement is scheduled for Jan. 17.
