Century-Old State Street Buildings in Chicago Avoid Demolition

A pair of century-old skyscrapers in Chicago’s Loop are now slated for preservation after previous plans to demolish the two buildings have been scrapped.

The General Services Administration (GSA) will seek new uses for the properties at 202 S. State St. and 220 S. State St., the agency said in a report published last week, according to Crain’s. GSA acquired them in 2007 and recently passed Federal legislation originally earmarked $52 million for the demolition of the properties.

Now, the federal government has now reversed course and plans to redevelop the buildings rather than tear them down. The skyscrapers have been repeatedly placed on Preservation Chicago’s Most Endangered list, and the Commission on Chicago Landmarks recommended that they be given landmark status in 2023.
