CDOT Advances Biggest Bike Lane Expansion in City History
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) said Wednesday that it is in the midst of the biggest bike lane expansion in the City’s history, due to targeted investments from Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot’s Chicago Works capital plan. With a total of $17 million in new funding this year and next, CDOT is installing 100 miles of new and upgraded bike lanes.
CDOT Commissioner Gia Biagi made the announcement at the location of new protected bike lane on 119th Street on the South Side. Biagi also released a blueprint for building more bikeways that puts an emphasis on community-led planning and connected neighborhood networks.
“There is no one-size-fits-all approach to growing our bike network,” said Biagi. “Every neighborhood has different opportunities, challenges, and perceptions of biking. This means different strategies are required for different neighborhoods.”
CDOT said bike use in Chicago nearly doubled between the Great Recession and the pandemic.
