Caterpillar Closing Aurora Plant
Caterpillar plans to close its machine production plant in Aurora, IL and lay off 800 workers, who can apply to work at other facilities. The machinery manufactured at the plant will be moved to other sites.
The Peoria-based heavy equipment manufacturer still plans to maintain a presence in Aurora with managers, engineers and product support employees remaining. Its workforce in Aurora currently totals roughly 2,000.
Production of large wheel loaders and compactors will move to Decatur, along with about 500 jobs, while manufacturing of medium wheel loaders and another 150 jobs will move to North Little Rock, AK.
The closure of the plant is slated to be completed by the end of 2018. Caterpillar has been hit with decreased sales, forcing the company to slash production capacity.
