Carbon Challenge Now Covers 6% of Built NYC
After last week’s expansion to New York City’s Carbon Challenge, the number of buildings included in the challenge’s goal to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by nearly a third (30%) over 10 years now total over 325 million-square-feet of space. That’s 6% of the built square footage throughout the city.
On Jan. 27, the city added 22 commercial owners and tenants, adding more than 58 million square feet to the challenge.
The challenge began in 2007, under Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Participants so far have achieved an average 20% reduction. Ten participants have already achieved full 30% reduction.
The 10 participating commercial owners include the Durst Organization, Forest City, Normandy Real Estate Partners, The Related Companies, Rockefeller Group, Rudin Management Company, Inc., RXR Realty, SL Green Realty Corp., Silverstein Properties Inc. and Vornado Realty Trust.
