Cannabis Retailer Names former Walmart Exec as COO
Cannabis retailer MedMen Enterprises Inc. hired Ben Cook, a former executive with Walmart Inc. and Apple Inc. as chief operating officer. MedMen operates cannabis dispensaries in California, Nevada and New York. Its private equity fund, MedMen Opportunity Fund II LP, contributes to political campaigns in support of legalizing recreational use of marijuana.
Cook was most recently vice president of supply chain at Sam’s Club, where he led a turnaround of the company’s supply chain, and also converted some closed stores into e-commerce fulfillment centers. He also served as senior vice president of global management and logistics with Target Corp., and director of logistics and supply chain strategy at Apple.
The hire comes as the cannabis industry is growing from a network of independent growers and cooperatives into systems that are consolidating products for wholesale and retail distribution. In recent months, MedMen has acquired real-estate leases and dispensaries in Florida, Illinois and Arizona. This week, it acquired Chicago-based PharmaCann LLC in an all-stock transaction valued at $682 million.
