Canadian National Railway Co. to Invest $170M in Chicago Region

The Canadian National Railway Company (CN) plans to invest approximately $170 million in Illinois as part of its 2025 capital investment program.

The investment will support track maintenance and strategic infrastructure initiatives in the state, including efforts towards the construction of the Chicago Logistics Hub and projects to upgrade technology and training facilities at CN’s Homewood Campus, as well as network improvements.

The announcement of the plans follows CN’s 2024 investment of $234 million in Illinois, which included a $54 million siding extension project, $15 million for new equipment, including 500 intermodal containers, and $10 million for intermodal operations improvements.

CN has nearly 1,700 employees in Illinois, and a network of 1,256 railroad route miles. “CN has been a tremendous community partner across Will County for many years,” said Hugh O’Hara, President of the Will County Governmental League. CN said the investment will create 600 construction jobs during the building process and about 6,500 permanent jobs after construction is completed.
