Can San Diegans Find Favor with Tijuana Living?

The rising cost of housing in San Diego is helping fuel development across the border. Tijuana is experiencing the biggest residential building boom in more than a decade.

San Diego leaders weighed in on the emerging trend of Mexican Nationals and Mexican Americans living in Tijuana and working in San Diego, who are finding residential housing options in Tijuana. U.S. citizens still face legal barriers to ownership.

The consensus is Tijuana can serve as a viable alternative. The biggest reasons cited were close proximity and significantly lower rental rates. Living in Tijuana reduces long commutes to communities in Riverside and Imperial counties.

The primary argument against Tijuana becoming a viable option centered on quality of life issues, stemming from commute times as a result of waiting in line during rush-hour border crossing times.
