California Unemployment Backlog Hits 1.56M; State Resumes Taking Applications
California resumed taking initial unemployment applications on Monday following a two-week pause that was envisioned to help alleviate a build-up of claims. One of the ways the state believes it can improve the filing process is through a new online identity verification system that has been integrated into the EDD’s process and made its debut on Monday, as well.
Since the state’s decision to stop taking unemployment applications on Sept. 19, the backlog of California applications needing to be processed as of Sept. 30th had reached 1.56 million claims. That includes 1.02 million who’ve received a single payment, though have been waiting more than 21 days to get a second payment or be removed from receiving additional benefits.
There is also a backlog of 542,000 people as of Sept. 30 that had filed claims and have waited more than 21 days to either receive the first payment or be disqualified from receiving benefits.
Meanwhile, EDD began using ID.me to verify the identity of applicants on a waiting list. So far, it had sent email or text messages to roughly 136,000 people that had signed up to get notifications during two week reset period.
