California Seeks to End Fossil Fuel-Produced Electricity by 2045
California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed legislation that seeks to phase out fossil fuel-produced electricity by 2045. The move comes ahead of a climate change summit being held in San Francisco this week with global leaders set to attend.
Gov. Brown told The Associated Press, “We want others to do likewise, and if enough people often enough do what is needed, we will curb global warming. But, we’re definitely at the beginning of what’s going to be a long and difficult and contentious journey.”
The state continues to take an ambitious and proactive path in establishing environmental initiatives toward a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% over the next 12 years. The new measure would require California’s utilities to generate 60% of their energy from wind, solar and other renewable sources by 2030. After that, only carbon-free sources would be used to generate electricity by 2045.
