California Assembly Bill Restricting Industrial Development Dies in Committee
AB 1000, a bill that in its original form would have largely shut down industrial development statewide on properties larger than 100,000 square feet, failed to pass the California State Assembly Local Government Committee, NAIOP SoCal reported. The bill only got two “yes” votes, short of the number needed to advance out of committee.
“Defeating AB 1000 is a significant victory for NAIOP SoCal, NAIOP IE and a broad coalition of partners across the state,” according to NAIOP SoCal. Prior to Wednesday’s vote, the scope of AB 1000 was narrowed to Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, among the nation’s epicenters for industrial development.
“Members of the committee from both parties expressed many concerns about the impact of the bill, including a one-size-fits-all mandate, usurpation of local control, loss of jobs and harm to the critically important logistics industry,” NAIOP SoCal said.
Still in the offing is AB 1748, which would establish a 300-foot setback requirement on Inland Empire industrial developments larger than 400,000 square feet. The bill was unanimously approved by the committee.
