CAA Opposes Bill to Create Tenants’ Rights Office
The California Apartment Association (CAA) said Tuesday it opposes legislation introduced last month seeking to establish an Office of Tenants’ Rights and Protections, calling the measure “an unnecessary and costly new layer of bureaucracy in state government.” The Assembly bill, AB 2187, written by Assemblymen Isaac Bryan (D-Los Angeles) and Matt Haney (D-San Francisco), would create a new government entity focused on tenant protections.
“However, California already has numerous laws protecting tenants, including statewide limits on rent increases, just-cause eviction requirements, and anti-discrimination provisions,” according to CAA. “Also, well-funded tenant organizations already are actively advocating for renters’ rights, receiving substantial funding from various organizations and government funding.”
The bill, currently in its initial stages, provides no further details on its function or funding, although CAA is expecting these details to emerge. “With California facing a massive budget deficit, CAA maintains that the bill should not move forward, as it would likely require significant taxpayer funding to establish and operate the proposed office,” the association said in a statement.
