CA Coastal Commission Report Threatens Viability of Large Development

Newport Banning Ranch’s proposed mixed-use development is in jeopardy, following the release of a California Coastal Commission  report. Environmental scientists with the group recommend cutting the project’s size roughly in half.

The commission is scheduled to vote on the project in early September. The Newport Beach, CA developer says it may file a lawsuit against the state commission if the board follows the staff recommendation.

The company wants to develop the 400-acre property, which has been an active oil field exploration and drilling site for 75 years. The limited 37-acre development plan includes an 895-unit apartment complex, a 75-room hotel, 20-room hostel and a small commercial center, as well as 329 acres of rehabilitated open space.

The staff recommendation allows roughly 500 residential units on 20 acres, to give more habitat and land buffers, for threatened and endangered species.
