Burlington Northern Santa Fe Planning $3.3B Spend in 2018

Fort Worth-based Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) announced it’s planning to spend $3.3 billion on upgrades to its rail network and maintenance projects. The proposed amount matches 2017’s spending.

BNSF will spend $2.4 billion to maintain and repair its rail network and rolling stock, which will include rehabilitating 13,000 miles of track. Also on the upgrade list is $500 million to expand capacity and promote efficiencies. An additional $300 million will be spent on freight cars and additional equipment.

The railroad said it was nearly done with an automatic braking system installation; a system that the federal government requires. The braking system implementation deadline is Dec. 31, 2018.
