Brooks Development Authority Snags 55 Acres

The Brooks Development Authority – which has oversight of 1,300 acres on San Antonio’s south side – added to its land collection, acquiring an additional 55 acres from San Antonio State Hospital. The acreage is at South Presa Street and Southeast Military Drive.

Formerly the site of the Brooks Air Force Base, which closed down in 2002 as part of the U.S. federal government’s Base Realignment and Closure program, Brooks today is a mixed-use project containing office, industrial, retail, restaurants and residential space, as well as hotels. As such, the development is running out of land on which to build.

Brooks’ CEO Leo Gomez told the San Antonio Business Journal that more land acquisitions are under consideration, but he declined to say where. “We obviously want to be sensitive to the surrounding neighborhoods and what kind of development they want in their community,” he said.
