Brooks City Base Renamed “Brooks”
Brooks City Base in San Antonio’s southeast corridor now has a new name. The 1,300-acre master-planned community, on the site of the former Brooks Air Force Base, is now known simply as “Brooks.”
The name change dates back to 2015, when a survey conducted by Baselice & Associates found that 52% of San Antonio residents believe Brooks is still a military installation. The AFB closed in 2002 as part of the U.S. federal government’s Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program.
Brooks has commercial, residential and retail venues. However, some still wonder if apartments are only for military families, or if identification is necessary to get onto the campus, according to Brooks President and CEO Leo Gomez.
“When Brooks first opened to the public, the military presence created a marketing advantage. Now, rooftops, retail, jobs and access are the selling point,” said Dan Markson with NRP Group, which runs the Kennedy apartment complex at 7714 Kennedy Hill Dr.
