Bronzeville’s Historic Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church Hits the Market
Bronzeville’s historic Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church has been listed for sale for $799,000 by Coldwell Banker Realty. The 26,000-square-foot space property at 4130 S. Indiana Avenue is at the center of efforts by preservationists to save it from potential demolition.
The building is in need of significant repairs and was boarded up earlier this year. The move to sell the property comes as church leaders and local groups work to landmark the church. They recently appeared before the Landmarks Commission to submit the building for consideration.
Prominent activists and leaders have visited the church throughout history, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and former President Jimmy Carter. Reverend Louis Rawls, the father of Grammy-winning singer Lou Rawls, founded Tabernacle.
Dispute for control of the church is ongoing between church loan specialist Eagle Ledge Foundation, which filed for bankruptcy in 2022, and the Chicago Title Land Trust.
