Bronx Gets Ferry Service After 80-Year Hiatus

Ferry service has returned to the Bronx for the first time since the 1930s, with the debut of service between the borough and three Manhattan stops. The NYC Ferry operates from a new location in the Bronx’s Soundview neighborhood to East 90th Street, Midtown and Wall Street in Manhattan.

“For people in this surrounding community, it will cut their ride to Lower Manhattan in half,” Mayor Bill de Blasio told TV news station NY1. “It will literally take a ride that has taken, in many cases, up to 90 minutes, and turn it into a 45-minute ride to where so many people work.”

The Soundview route is expected to add approximately 400,000 additional riders to what is already about five million riders annually between Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. Boats will run every 30 minutes during peak travel periods, and every 50 minutes during off-peak times.
