Brightline West Breaks Ground on High-Speed Vegas-SoCal Rail Line

Brightline West broke ground Monday on what it called the nation’s first true high-speed rail system, which will connect Las Vegas to Southern California. With project costs estimated at $12 billion, the 218-mile system will be constructed on the Interstate 15 median and is based on Brightline’s vision of connecting city pairs that are too short to fly and too far to drive.

“People have been dreaming of high-speed rail in America for decades,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said at Monday’s groundbreaking ceremony. “It’s really happening this time.”

The project was recently awarded $3 billion in funding from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. Otherwise it will be privately funded.

The rail line will connect Vegas and points in SoCal’s Inland Empire in two hours, according to Brightline West. Stops in SoCal will include Rancho Cucamonga—with commuter rail linking to Los Angeles—Apple Valley and Hesperia.
