Microsoft Hits Pause Button on 90-Acre Campus in Atlanta
Microsoft has confirmed to Connect CRE that it is “pausing” on plans to develop a 90-acre campus in Atlanta’s Grove Park neighborhood.
“The land is not for sale, and we still aim to set aside a quarter of the 90 acres for community needs,” a Microsoft spokesperson wrote in an emailed statement. “We intend to reengage in planning efforts when expansion is warranted.”
“We are evaluating our global real estate footprint against how our employees are working today, focusing on creating density across our existing offices,” the spokesperson added, noting that the company is moving forward with construction of three new datacenters in Fulton and Douglas County as planned.
Vendors have been instructed to stop work on the project, which has been widely expected to generate up to 15,000 positions and make Microsoft a major employer in Atlanta.
According to local press reports, Microsoft purchased the land in 2021 for $127 million and planned for the development to also include affordable housing along with grocery and other retail.
Microsoft’s announcement comes as tech companies across the nation are navigating layoffs.
