BREAKING NEWS: Amazon Scraps Plans for NYC HQ2
Days after published reports that Amazon was holding internal discussions about going ahead with plans to build one of two second-headquarter campuses in Long Island City in the face of political opposition, the e-tailing giant has pulled the plug on a two-campus scenario. The company said Thursday morning it would not build a New York City campus, although it will proceed with a campus in Northern Virginia.
“For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term,” the company announced in a blog posting that was also tweeted.
“While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence, and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City,” Amazon said.
The company thanked New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio “and the many other community leaders and residents who welcomed our plans and supported us along the way. We hope to have future chances to collaborate, as we continue to build our presence in New York over time.”
