Brackenridge Park Pump House Targeted for Restoration
An agreement between the city of San Antonio and the San Antonio Conservation Society will help lead to restoration of the Brackenridge Park Pump House, an historic structure that is the oldest industrial building in the city. The conservation society presented a $300,000 gift for restoration in honor of the city’s tricentennial. The estimated $1 million remaining restoration costs will come from a 2017 municipal bond. Work on the structure will begin in fall 2018.
The 343-acre, public Brackenridge Park is just north of downtown, and was created from land donated to the city by George Washington Brackenridge. The park is downstream from the San Antonio River, which made it the ideal place for a pumping house, which was built in the late 19th century.
The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, which oversees the park and its structures, has not indicated how the pump house will be used following restoration.
