Boston Leads U.S. in Rush-Hour Traffic Jams

For the second year in a row, Boston ranked at the top—or bottom—of the list of U.S. cities for rush-hour traffic jams. That’s according to location-based analytics firm INRIX, which also ranks the city as ninth-worst in the world, thanks to an average loss of 149 hours per year for rush-hour drivers.

INRIX said the ranking may derive from geographic boundaries, such as the Atlantic Ocean and Boston’s centuries-old street layout, causing backups as drivers enter the city from the highway.

“A city’s age is the best predictor of congestion, followed by geography,” INRIX’s Trevor Reed told the Boston Globe. “That level of density and those small streets lend poorly to automobile use.”

A spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation told the Globe, “There is no single silver-bullet solution to congestion, and easing traffic will require collaboration among state agencies, municipal leaders, employers and developers.”
