Boston/Cambridge Ranks First Nationally for Life Sciences R&D Talent

The Boston/Cambridge metro area ranks #1 in CBRE’s annual U.S. Life Sciences Talent Trends report, highlighting its dominance in life sciences employment across BioPharma R&D, manufacturing, and medtech fields. “Boston/Cambridge once again leads in the life sciences job sector as large companies are attracted to the region’s top universities and highly educated workforce,” said Jon Varholak, Vice Chair at CBRE.

The area ranks first nationally in BioPharma R&D with 52,270 employees, including 17,080 medical scientists and 10,240 biochemists and biophysicists. It ranks second in BioPharma manufacturing, with 27,950 jobs led by inspectors, testers, and biological technicians. In medtech, Boston/Cambridge ranks third with 41,340 jobs, primarily industrial engineers and electronic assemblers.

The report evaluates the top 100 U.S. life sciences labor markets, underscoring Boston/Cambridge’s unique position as the only market to place in the top three for all major BioPharma subsectors.
