Border Towns Sign Rio Grande Valley MPO Agreement

Leaders from the Texas border municipalities agreed to merge three separate Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) into a new one, called the Rio Grande Valley MPO. The designation agreement effectively combines the Harlingen-San Benito MPO, the Brownsville MPO and the Hidalgo County MPO into a single entity that can take advantage of state and federal tax dollars to address infrastructure improvement through the region.

Texas Senator Juan Hinojosa (D-District 20), indicated that the “merged MPO will be more efficient, and allow for projects to be considered and approved as a region.” The combined organization means increased revenue to repair roads, maintain the highway system, and fund border projects to prevent loss of revenue at international ports of entry.
