The Arlington (Virginia) County Board granted final approval to a controversial redevelopment project in a western neighborhood of Rosslyn, VA. The redevelopment, which will include a new school, park, fire station, affordable housing and residential-retail high-rises, will be built on the 1500-1600 block of Wilson Boulevard. Penzance Properties is the developer of the project, which is anticipated to be fully built out by the early 2020s.

Every piece of the plan, known as the Western Rosslyn Area Planning Study, created a great deal of debate during the past four years. Neighbors have objected to the impact of the development on a local park. Preservation advocates fought to save the 107-year-old Wilson School, which will be razed to build a new one. There were questions about where to place a temporary fire station until the new one was built.

A construction date has not yet been announced for the project.
