Bill Limits Government Control of Rentals

Senate Bill 451 has been introduced to the Texas Legislature. If passed, the bill would prevent Texas cities from either banning or restricting short-term home rentals. Though some cities – such as Austin, San Antonio and Fort Worth – have already enacted such restrictions, the law would apply to the entire state. The measure was introduced by Sen. Kelly Hancock, a Republican from North Richland Hills.

Though the bill is meant to protect Texas property owners from governmental overreach, critics believe it could lower property values, while allowing owners to rent houses to people who might be disruptive to a neighborhood. But under Bill 451, governments could still prohibit short-term renters from housing sex offenders, or selling alcohol or illegal drugs.
