Big Zoning Changes in 2017
In neighborhoods across the New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio plans to make big changes to the rules that govern what property owners can build on their land. Proposed zoning changes are part of his plan to build or preserve 200,000 units of affordable housing, while encouraging new development.
In several neighborhoods, advocates for new development are squaring off against neighborhood advocates who worry that new construction will lead to higher rents that displace existing residents.
The neighborhoods include Chinatown, East Harlem and Inwood in Manhattan; Gowanus and Bushwick in Brooklyn; Southern Boulevard in the Bronx; Bay Street in Staten Island and Long Island City; and Flushing and Far Rockaway in Queens.
