Best Cities for Female Entrepreneurs

America is a nation comprised of more than 11.6 million female-owned businesses. It’s also a country where the gender wage gap still exists, and employment rates vary greatly by state.

Business.org conducted research to find the best cities for women to start a business in 2018, and shared other interesting findings along with the results. The study weighed five key metrics, namely: the percentage of women-owned businesses, gender wage gap, female unemployment rate, number of new businesses per 100,000 people, number of National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) chapters.

For starters, here’s how the cities ranked:

  1. Greater Tampa Bay Area, FL
  2. Silicon Valley, CA
  3. Seattle Metropolitan Area, WA
  4. Greater Orlando, FL
  5. Inland Empire, CA
  6. Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN-WI
  7. Bay Area, CA
  8. Pittsburgh, PA
  9. St. Louis, MO-IL
  10. Miami Metropolitan Area, FL

Interestingly, some states have metros that exist in both the best and worst list, like Florida and Tennessee. Out of the top five worst cities for female entrepreneurs, Utah is mentioned twice, which may be attributable to its stay-at-home mom tradition for women.

On average, Americans create about 225 businesses per 100,000 people monthly. As for the wage gap, the best and worst cities are in the Eastern U.S. In general, the overall unemployment rate for women is better than men.
