Berklee College of Music Acquires Development Site Adjacent to Campus

Berklee College of Music has bought a Fenway site permitted for 400 residential units in a move to increase its space on campus, reported the Boston Business Journal.

The site, located between Berklee’s campus and Fenway Park, sits just off the Massachusetts Turnpike, giving Berklee an opportunity for greater visibility and a way to connect Berklee’s campus with the Fenway neighborhood, the Business Journal reported. Berklee, which paid $28 million for the site, didn’t say whether it will eventually be involved in building the permitted 23-story tower or will scrap the plans.

The site at 2 Charlesgate West, which includes a seven-story building, stands next-door to a performing arts building on Ipswich Street for the Boston Conservatory, which has been part of Berklee since 2016. The planned 23-story tower was first pitched by Scape USA in 2019. It received permitting approval last year but never went forward.
