Baxter Building Renovation Underway

Renovation on Harlingen, TX’s Baxter Building has begun, with MRE Capital repurposing the 91-year-old property into Baxter Lofts. The $4.5 million project is expected to turn what was one of the city’s largest eyesores into a primarily low-income apartment development.

The nine-month construction project caps off a 30-year push to restore the building. The 28,000-square-foot Baxter Building, once known as the Rio Grande National Life Insurance Building, opened in 1927 at 106 S. A St., and was one of the Rio Grande Valley’s tallest buildings. However, by the 1960s, the property had fallen into disrepair.

MRE Capital received funding from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, to help offset some of the costs of renovation.
