Baton Rouge Commission Says No to Southgate

The Baton Rouge Planning Commission has recommended that Southgate, an 18-story high-rise student housing campus on Burbank Drive near Louisiana State University, be denied. In its report, the Commission points to concept plan inconsistencies, parking issues, unplanned expansions and the applicant’s filing inconsistencies as reasons for denial.

The development calls for 446 one-to-six-bedroom units to be situated on 5.4 acres. The report notes a density of 87 units per acre. Developer D.W. Day first submitted plans for his Southgate Development in 2000 for a 15-story high-rise. In 2013, he submitted a revised plan that increased the high-rise to 18 stories. The Planning Commission gave approval both times.
