Bally’s Awarded License to Open First Chicago Casino

Chicago’s Illinois Gaming Board has voted to roll the dice, awarding Bally’s Corp. the license to open the city’s first casino.

This first step green-lights the company’s plans to build a temporary at Medinah Temple, an empty downtown building in River North. The 134,000-square-foot facility is expected to house 750 slot machines and more than 50 table games.

The vote marks the path forward in a series of measures Bally will need to pass to open the gaming venues. Bally’s stated it would create 700 jobs at the initial temporary location and 3,000 for the permanent site.

Construction for the $1.7 billion permanent River West complex casino, located at Chicago Avenue and Halsted in the 30-acre former Tribune Publishing site, is expected to begin in late 2024. Once complete, the River West complex will become the state’s largest casino, and it is expected to open in 2026.
