Balenciaga Lease Brings Luxury Retail’s “Raw Architecture” Concept to Boston
Fashion retailer Balenciaga has opened its first Boston location, in a stand-alone, front-entrance space in Copley Place. The 373,000-square-foot building is located within the mixed-use Copley Square development in the Back Bay neighborhood.
Balenciaga’s 3,000-square-foot lease was managed by Velda Turan, SVP of leasing for Copley Place owner Simon Property Group.
The new store showcases Balenciaga’s Raw Architecture concept, which reacts and responds to a building’s existing structural elements. The concept inherently consumes fewer virgin materials and meet strict sustainability requisites, using the qualities of construction as an alternative to decoration.
A chipped, raw concrete façade affixed with Balenciaga’s logo in glowing white lights announces the stark contrast between this space and its polished surroundings. Exposed inner workings such as cables hanging from a gridded ceiling are visible from the outside.
Over 306 square meters of poured concrete floor underline a greyscale of deliberately unfinished and deconstructed displays, stained wall panels and columns, tarnished metal tables and industrial-style lighting and racks.
