Sixth Street to welcome apartment community

Austin’s Sixth Street to Welcome New Rental Community

The long-awaited re-make of East Sixth Street is taking shape. The first residential project was recently approved by Austin’s Historic Landmark Commission.

Stream Realty has taken the wheel of the renovation project, wresting control of dozens of properties. The goal is to move from the gritty atmosphere tied to Sixth Street in the past to an all-day environment for visitors, with new options, such as eateries and shops and more pedestrian-friendly features, such as farmers’ markets and concerts. Leasing activity began earlier this year.

Community Impact reports the commission approved the district’s first larger mixed-use project: the redevelopment of 611 E. Sixth St. into hundreds of new apartments.

Ryan Cos is developing the proposed 184,000-square-foot Grant Building. The existing property will be turned into a six-story, 232-unit residential complex.

The development will feature 10,000 square feet of street-level commercial space, 14,000 square feet for amenities and leasing, and a two-level parking garage.
