Austin’s Oldest H-E-B Slated for the Wrecking Ball

H-E-B will be demolishing an existing store – Austin’s oldest – at Oltorf Street and South Congress Avenue.  And, once the old store is gone, H-E-B is planning a bigger, better store in its place. Specifically, the new H-E-B at 2400 S. Congress Ave. will be a multi-story building, complete with underground parking, a beer garden, food hall and stage for live music.

The reason for the 100% revamp? Despite more renovations than any other area store over the years, the existing, 70,000-square-foot grocery store is at capacity. “We’re out of parking, and we’re out of space,” H-E-B spokesperson Leslie Sweet told the Austin American-Statesman.

Construction on a new store won’t start until at least 2020. H-E-B will open a temporary store in a 24,000-square-foot storefront formerly occupied by CVS. The temporary location is part of the Twin Oaks shopping center that H-E-B acquired in 2016.
