Austin Symphony Orchestra Building Heads to the Wrecking Ball
The 54,000-square-foot building housing the Austin Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is headed toward demolition. According to Community Impact News, the space at 1117 Red River St. will be the site of a mixed-use project, of which a new orchestra building will be a part.
However, what that downtown Austin project will contain is still somewhat mysterious, though filings with the city indicate that it could include office, multifamily and a hotel. Community Impact noted that, in addition to the one-story ASO structure, the 13-acre tract is occupied by Velocity Credit Union. Velocity is planning to move to northwest Austin.
The City Council will hear a rezoning case on April 11, which would move the 43-year-old symphony building from commercial services to the central business district.
