Austin Soccer Deal Finalized — At Last
The city of Austin and Precourt Sports Ventures finalized a lease and development deal for McKalla Place, a 24-acre, city-owned property in North Austin. The stadium deal calls for a 100% privately financed soccer stadium, that will go north at a cost of $225 million, with a capacity for up to 21,000 fans.
Construction on the stadium is scheduled to begin in 2019, with opening anticipated for spring 2021. The stadium will be the home venue for PSV’s Austin FC, though it’s uncertain if the season will begin in 2020 or 2021. If the team takes the field in 2020, it would play its inaugural season at a temporary facility.
The stadium deal caps a period during which PSV pushed to relocate the Columbus Crew soccer team to Austin. The Crew, however, will remain in Ohio, under a potential deal involving the Haslam family, which owns the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.
