Austin Releases Land Code First Draft

The city of Austin released the first draft of its land-development code rewrite, called CodeNEXT, to the public for review and comment. CodeNEXT represents the first update to Austin’s land development code since the mid-1980s.

The 1,198-page code will help the city determine how land should be used. As can be guessed, stakeholders have their own ideas as to what the code should be. While real estate developers want increased supply and looser regulations, neighborhood groups are concerned about changes that could have a negative impact on Austin’s character.

The next step for the draft is a council work review section, which will take place this evening. During the next year, input will be sought from the public, which will help updates. The new code is scheduled for adoption in April 2018.
