Plans, contracts revealed for $1.6B Austin Convention Center

Austin Readies for New $1.6B Convention Center

The contracts have been granted. It’s time to get out with the old and in with the new. JE Dunn and Turner will build the new Austin Convention Center. LMN and Page Southerland Page will design and engineer it.

The transformation is anticipated to begin in 2025 and cost $1.6 billion. When completed in 2029, The Austin Business Journal reports the redeveloped center’s economic impact on the city is expected to grow from $468 million to more than $750 million. It’s expected to create 1,622 jobs.

The site’s redevelopment will be paid for by the city’s hotel occupancy tax and the convention center’s own revenue. It will nearly double the existing convention center.

To increase capacity on the existing footprint, much of the new convention center will be built underground, up to 65 feet below street level. Three separate buildings are set to rise on the underground core of the new convention center. The tallest of the new buildings will be 30 stories high.
