Austin and its High-Tech Jobs

Perhaps to no one’s surprise, Austin is best known for a strong percentage of high-tech jobs. A recent article from the Austin Chamber of Commerce actually put numbers to the fact, pointing out that, for one thing, tech industry jobs in and around the Capital City in 2017 totaled more than 138,500. This represents 14.1% of all jobs, compared to 7% nationally.

The chamber also noted that, from 2012, employment in high-tech industries grew by 23.7%, versus all industries in Austin. However, over the past decade, the gain for high tech – 30% — fell short of the gain for all industries – 31.1%. The reason was the recession, which put a dent in the industry employment.

“High tech” includes jobs in manufacturing, information, engineering, R&D and labs.
