Austin Chipmaker Spending $83M on Factory Improvements

Chipmaker Infineon Technologies is selling its plant at 5204 E. Ben White Blvd. in Austin to semiconductor company SkyWater Technology.

The Austin Business Journal reports that in spite of the sale, Infineon will continue to invest in the facility to make sure it’s operational by the time the acquisition is finalized. The companies have agreed to a long-term supply agreement.

The company is eyeing about $83 million in improvements at the site. Infineon plans to spend about $45.5 million on new equipment and tools, as well as $37.9 million to upgrade the facility.

Infineon’s 960 employees will become SkyWater employees. SkyWater said it will use the fab for chips on nodes from 65 to 130 nanometers that are used in vehicles and defense devices.

It was the former home of Cypress Semiconductor Corp., which was acquired by Infineon in April 2020.
