Austin airport to kick off $165M in improvements this fall

Austin-Bergstrom Airport to Kick Off $165M Growth Project This November

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has revealed a start date for its West Gate expansion. Construction on the $165 million addition is expected to begin this fall. It will add about 82,000 square feet of new space, including three new gates for aircraft, space for a new lounge, office space, an outdoor patio and room for concessions. 12 new boarding bridges will also be added.

The architect on the project is Page Southerland Page and Hensel Phelps Construction Co. is the general contractor.

But the airport is not stopping there. Future plans will include filling in the empty space above baggage claim to add more square footage for bag checking and security screening, at a cost of $175 million. A new centralized bagging handling system with the ability to process 4,000 bags per hour, at a cost of $176.5 million. Expanding TSA Checkpoint 3. A new central utility plant and Austin Energy substation, at a cost of $14 million. The airport handled 21 million passengers in 2022, 50% more than the previous year.
