Austin Airport Nearly Ready to Begin $4B Expansion
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) is in the final planning stages of a $4 billion expansion. The major contractors have been chosen, and the airport leaders are eager to fill in the subcontractors so work can begin.
The Austin Business Journal reports the Austin’s airport expansion will be multifaceted, including the addition of a new terminal that could yield up to 30 new gates, a new parking garage, a tunnel to connect the existing terminal to the new terminal, redesigned taxiways for aircraft, redesigned baggage systems, and a new arrivals and departures hall. ABIA leaders have said they hope to complete the expansion by 2030.
The prime construction partners on the expansion are Austin Commercial LP, Austin Bridge and Road, Hensel Phelps Construction, Whiting-Turner Contracting Co., J.E. Dunn Construction and Sundt Construction Co. / Archer Western. More than $400 million has also been set aside to include small, local, minority-owned, and women-owned businesses in the expansion effort.
