AURA Reaction to Austin’s CodeNEXT Map: No Way

AURA, an Austin, TX-based pro-urbanism group, had plenty of things to say about the city’s first draft of CodeNEXT. None of it was good. The group, which called the map “fatally flawed,” listed six complaints about the plan, which is being processed to determine what and where development will take place in Austin.

The group’s complaints include lack of additional housing capacity in Central and West Austin, a decrease in density in some areas of the central city, a lack of row houses and missing middle housing in key areas, and inadequate transition zones designed to increase building density from neighborhoods to major roads.

The group did have praise, however, for parts of the map, including the downtown area, which will come closer to implementing the Downtown Neighborhood Plan. Additionally, the group liked the plan to replace general retail-heavy commercial zones bordering high-traffic areas with zones allowing mixed use and residential uses.
