Auburn Gresham Redevelopment Plan Wins Inaugural Chicago Prize

A $32-million project to build a new urban farming campus on Chicago’s South Side is one component of Always Growing, Auburn Gresham, a collaborative economic development plan that’s the recipient of the first-ever, $10-million Chicago Prize from the Pritzker Traubert Foundation.

Separately, the state will provide $3 million in funding on the plan to transform a vacant brownfield parcel in Auburn Gresham into a Green Era Urban Farming Campus. The other component of Always Growing, Auburn Gresham will turn a 1920s-era terra cotta building into a Healthy Lifestyle Hub.

Combined, the two project components will cost $52.8 million. The city contributed $4 million in federal C.A.R.E.S. Act funds to help finance the Healthy Hub.

“Always Growing, Auburn Gresham is the kind of bold, innovative work, rooted in deep community partnerships that is needed to make our city more equitable and vibrant,” said Penny Pritzker, co-founder of the Pritzker Foundation.
