Gutted Atlanta hotel to convert to sr. housing

Atlanta Agency Eyeing Gutted Hotel for Sr. Housing

A one-time Ramada-run hotel will likely be turned into senior housing in Atlanta’s Summerhill neighborhood. The former Ramada Plaza hotel, now an empty concrete shell, is slated for 231 senior apartments.

The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports the lobby would be converted into amenities for prospective residents, such as a movie theater, fitness center, business center or library.

The 3.25-acre property, located across from Georgia State University’s Convocation Center, is within walking distance of restaurants, shops and a Publix grocery store situated along Georgia Avenue. Construction is underway on MARTA’s Summerhill bus rapid transit line with a stop planned near the hotel site.

Atlanta Housing would purchase the site for $17.5 million, pending approval from its board of commissioners and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The authority entered a purchase and sale agreement with the current owner, Pellerin Real Estate Partners.

Under Atlanta Housing’s proposal, the units would be rented at affordable rates to tenants who are 55 or older.
