The Atlanta City Council is considering a ban on new self-storage facilities. The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports the ordinance would ban the facilities within the Beltline Overlay District, which includes properties within a half-mile of the transportation corridor. Drafters of the legislation believe allowing more storage centers to be built in the area could undermine efforts to create walkable, lively spaces in the city.

Three years ago the council voted to ban self-storage facilities within 500 feet of the Beltline. The new measure would effectively broaden the ban to apply to a wider geographic area.

Over the years, the city has restricted several kinds of projects near the Beltline, including gas stations, drive-thrus and data centers.

The Atlanta BeltLine is a 33-mile loop of multi-use trails, parks, and future transit connecting 45 in-town neighborhoods, built on former railroad corridors.
