Astrodome $105M Renovation OK’d by County
Harris County commissioners voted to move forward with a $105 million plan to renovate the long-abandoned Houston Astrodome into an event and convention space. The unanimous vote caps a September 2016 meeting, during which the commissioners approved engineering and design of the project. The recent vote was the final step needed before design and eventual construction of the project could begin.
The plan is to raise the ground level two floors to fit in 1,400 parking spaces, and transform the former home of the Houston Astros baseball team into a space for festivals and concerts. County officials believe the renovation could also mean additional commercial uses in the more than 550,000-square-foot dome.
The Astrodome has not housed a professional sports team since the Astros moved to Minute Maid Park in 2000. Two years later, NRG Stadium opened in the dome complex to serve as the home of the NFL’s Texans.
